Abstract
As part of an ongoing research into contemporary manifestations of audiovisual art forms, this essay asks if visual music can be described as a genre. The contemporary use of the term oscillates between a certain randomness, describing all kinds of audiovisual creation, and various more precise definitions. This essay hopes to contribute to a more substantial description of contemporary visual music by combining a close analysis of the discourse on visual music with the analysis of works by Transforma and A-li-ce, examples of contemporary audiovisual performances at the intersection between visual music, performance, and music theater.
